We know plastic pollution and climate change can threaten insect pollinators, but the story gets more complex when we take into account eusocial nature of many.
In this latest publication, we used computer vision techniques to track the impacts of microplastic and/or heat exposure on bumblebee (Bombus terristris) colonies. While the effects on individuals were often considered sublethal and somewhat trivial, significant impairments to colony developments emerged through chronic accumulation and social interaction. Such negative effects would eventually threaten the essential pollination services that they provide for agriculture and terrestrial ecosystems in general, as plastic pollution and climate change becoming the global risks for decades to come. This is the very first leading research paper for me as a PhD candidate, and it’s been a long and challenging journey. For the past several years, I managed to build an automatic rearing system from scratch, learned about computer vision and social networks, filed out a patent, and most importantly, try to get along with these fluffy energetic creatures ;-D

做实验的那段日子里,它们一度成为我的噩梦素材——有时铺天盖地的熊蜂向我涌来,有时我又成为蜂群中的一员。
